This Friday, June 19, the Council will discuss Committee Report No. 26-38 from the Water Authority, Social Services, and Parks Committee that puts Bill 119 before the full Council for action. Bill 119 would increase the fines from the current ranges of between $25 and $500 for first, second, and third offenses, respectively, to higher and more clear fines of $250, $500, and $1000 plus forfeiture of the sound system. Here is a link to Committee Report No. 26-38, which has the bill attached: CR 26-38 and Bill 119
Chair Lee proposes to modify these, based on input from the Maui Police Department and County attorneys, so that the fines would be $500, $750, and $1000 without forfeiture. These are described in County Communication No. 26-19, which is linked here: CC 26-19
Here is a link to the full meeting agenda, which provides information on how to testify and/or join the meeting. Testimony is accepted in writing, via phone, via Teams, or in person: County Council Meeting Agenda.
In addition, Chair Lee is working with MPD on improving enforcement.
She encourages you to provide testimony. Please contact her office if you have any questions at alice.lee@mauicounty.us.
